Jurmala is a unique city - the Latvian resort of the Baltic Sea. Everyone who has ever been to this beautiful place once, felt its special aura, created by unique old buildings, the pinewood, the dunes, the sea, the lakes and pure air.
The Baltic resort Jurmala is located 25 km far from Riga, the capital. Due to the beneficial geographic location the town is very easy for access from any country of the world. The international airport “Riga” is only 15 km far from the centre of the city. It takes only 30 minutes to get from the centre of Riga to Jurmala by a commuter train or by a route minibus.
The resort has a little over 60 thousand permanent residents. But in summer time this number of people doubles.
The town is stretching 36 kilometers and sandwiched between the Gulf of Riga in the north and the Lielupe River - in the south, but the railroad was built across the city. The stations are named as well as the city's 15 residential areas, which have evolved into Jurmala.
The first one - Priedaine – is located just 14 kilometers far from Riga, but the last station - Kemeri – is finished Jurmala area, 44 kilometers from Riga. Each area is somehow famous. Kemeri and Jaunkemeri were well-known as the health resorts for a long time, Majori – first of all, it’s the Jomas Street, which is very busy pedestrian street, there are many cafes, hotels and restaurants. Dzintari (Ambers) is famed for its concert hall, where classical music and popular artists’ concerts are held, as well as international music competitions and festivals take place. Lielupe is a large sports center. There are famous tennis courts, yacht clubs and the biggest water park in the Baltic States - "Livu aqua park." Melluzi, Asari and Vaivari are quieter places and suit for calm types of recreation.
How to Jurmala resort is known since the nineteenth century. 1959th The combination of three areas – Riga’s Jurmala, Sloka and Kemeri - Jurmala gained city status.
The history of Jurmala resort treatment starts in Kemeri. Kemeri is located 6 km away from the sea, between the lakes and the moors, rich with healing sulfurated springs. Exactly therefore the development of this place is connected with the healing properties of mineral waters and muds of local moors. The sacred Kemeri springs, used in folk medicine, have been known to doctors since the second half of the 18 – the beginning of the 19 century, when representatives of high society of Kurzeme (Courland), suffering from different maladies, arrived here.
On the territory of Kemeri there are over 30 sulfurated springs, as well as rich resources of curative peat mud and sapropelic silt (in Kaniera Lake). For the first time a chemical analysis of the Kemeri mineral waters was done in 1801 in St. Petersburg. The first public baths were built in 1838, and exactly since that moment the foundation of the resort began.
The improvement of transport communication, the opening in 1877 of the railroad en-route Riga – Tukums played as a decisive factor in the development of the resort. The vacationers began to arrive from different countries. As early as in ‘30s in the 20th century the resort deserved the international reputation.
Thanks to the mild climate, the recreation and the treatment at Jurmala resort are recommended to children and people intolerant to parching southern air. The combination with the newest methods of complex resort therapy at healing centers of Jurmala allows curing patients with cardiac and vessel diseases, diseases of central and peripheral nervous system, joints and vertebra, digestive system, gynecology, urology, metabolic disorders. There have been developed the unique sanitary programs for patients with musculoskeletal system disorders.
The peculiar attractiveness of the resort is created by a beautiful seaside landscape: the beach with golden sand in pine dunes, spacious wood parks, proximity of the sea and lakes; also natural resort factors, such as the mild climate, pure, richly ionized, air, therapeutic muds and mineral water – have a peculiar value due to the age-long history of application in treatment of sick people. Under conditions of the pharmacological boom the employment of these natural factors acquires a peculiar value in treatment of many diseases of organs, systems and tissues of the body diseases.
At the service of patients there are swimming pools with the cascade, physiotherapy, ergo therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic graduated walks (Nordic Walking), riding therapy (therapeutic horseback riding), salt room, saunas, Clinic, Fitness Center, Phyto bar, dental and dental offices, dental hygiene.
Jurmala offers services of the health and resort tourism, including treatment of different diseases and rehabilitation in a complex with an interesting culture program: sightseeing tours to historic and cultural spots of Jurmala, Riga and throughout Latvia, going to concerts, theatres, museums and other activities.
Year after year Jurmala becomes more and more attractive to tourists; there appear more possibilities for the resort treatment, recreation and entertainment.
In 1967 the Jurmala resorts were enlarged by the "Jaunkemeri" - balneotherapy and climate health resort, which which gained its reputation with natural treatment resources - hydrogen sulfide, bromine mineral water, natural peat and sapropelic mud.
