WHAT IS MUSIC THERAPY?

In Latvia, music therapy is an approved medical rehabilitation technology where in group or individual sessions music and means of expression are used to help the patients solve or overcome various mental or physical problems and to improve their psychoemotional state and cognitive, social, communicative and/or physical functions.

WHAT MUSIC THERAPY SESSIONS ARE LIKE

Music therapy can be arranged as a single session (either individually or in a group) or as a therapeutic process over several sessions. Depending on patient’s abilities and goals, an individual session may take 30-60 minutes while group sessions usually go on for 60-90 minutes.

WHO CAN ATTEND MUSIC THERAPY

  • Anyone who wants to balance their mental and inner state
  •  Patients with chronic pain, for relaxation and learning self-regulation activities which the patients can perform independently, including for prophylaxis.
  •  Patients with burn-out syndrome or who are overworked in their jobs, to have an opportunity to switch to another activity where they can express themselves spontaneously or learn new skills and experience relaxation and musical imagination which promotes psychoemotional and physical restoration
  •  Patients with neurological problems, to help speech and motor development, eye and arm coordination and to boost their motivation to get better
  •  Cancer patients, to help their psychological wellbeing, improve emotional and social functioning, reduce side effects of treatment (nausea, pain, changes in cognitive function), reduce anxiety, help them emotionally deal with their disease related experiences

MUSIC THERAPY SESSIONS

Active music therapy, where patients play and sing on their own and/or with a music therapist. This type of music therapy requires some simple, but well sounding musical instruments.

Receptive or passive music therapy where patients listen to the music selected by the therapist. Listening can be combined with imagination, relaxation or problem solving tasks.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MUSIC THERAPY

Music therapists work with all age groups from babies and toddlers to schoolchildren, teenagers, youths, adults and elderly people.
