WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Occupational therapy is a healthcare profession based on knowledge of targeted activities aimed at improving person’s daily activities, health and welfare in all aspects of life. Occupational therapy includes assessment and treatment working together with patients, their families, friends and carers. Most of the time occupational therapists work together with other rehabilitation specialists in multidisciplinary teams.

WHAT IS THE MAIN GOAL OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

The main task of occupational therapists is to help acquire/restore skills that allow patients be independent in their daily lives. In their work, occupational therapists use activities which are important for their patients to slow down progression of their diseases, delay disability and support their independence in daily life. Occupational therapists help people adapt to new circumstances and reduce or overcome environmental barriers. Occupational therapists teach their patients how to use and adapt aids to their daily life, and make hand orthoses from special materials.

Any person with movement disorder, after stroke, with head injuries, fractures, peripheral nerve damage, multiple injuries, rheumatic conditions, burns, mental conditions or people who need advice concerning environment accessibility may benefit from a visit to an occupational therapist. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST CONSULTATION AND SESSION

In the beginning, occupational therapist assesses patient's ability to perform daily activities, i.e. their capabilities, limitations and resources. Occupational therapists use various standard tests to determine patient’s functional limitations or resources objectively. For example, occupational therapists assess patient’s hand function, i.e. grip, movement and in-hand manipulation, sensory function, cognitive-perceptual function, i.e. memory, ability to concentrate, etc. They also assess physical environment and technical aids. Based on the assessment results, the occupational therapist draws up a treatment plan to be implemented working together with the patient, their family and other members of the rehabilitation team.
